COMMISSIONS INVITED (Click here!)

Black Bear, a member of the Blackfeet nation in Montana, lived in northern New Mexico for 27 years. "I ran, hunted, hiked, and sweated that landscape -- it is a living part of me". Black Bear seeks to tell the stories of life and living through his art. It is the Indian way.

Blossom:

14" X 10"

$1800

This vessel was enjoyable to create. I had used natural clay slips to
paint landscapes before (see Pedernal), however, had not painted
objects. Like O'Keeffe, I find the blossoms of flowers very sensual. In the desert southwest, flowers survive in an often desolate environ-ment, and while running or hiking in springtime or summer, their bright colors catch your eye and seem to say "life is a gift, live it"
Bear country is a land of mountains, hills and caves, usually wooded. The bear is a power symbol for Native peoples. Bear spirit is strength, bear will lead you to water, beware the sow and her cubs -- she is a fierce protector of her young, bear is a digger of roots and will find the "plants that heal", bear is a carnivore, but eater of berries as well. Bear power often symbolizes healing. Bear Country:

12 1/2" X 12"

$1750

Monument Valley:

10" X 8"

$800

The landscape shimmers in the heat of the sun. Mesas of red and yellow sandstone rise from the desert floor. White clouds drift by with no promise of rain. A mangy coyote ambles down an arroyo. Survival is a struggle.
This is a classic form -- simple and elegant. The red-clay slip has mica (not added) which, when placed in direct light makes it lustrous. Red Jar:

14" X 11"

$1400 (uncarved)

Hummingbirds:

9" X 8"

SOLD

(In the collection of Juanita Zolman )

Little hummingbirds! Sacred to so many of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas -- symbols of fertility -- they are admired for their quickness, bright colored feathers and are seen as fierce little protectors of their territories. These are qualities that we humans would value as their own.

Simple and graceful form with the red-clay slip. These forms remind me of the southwest landscape of sandstone mesas with red and yellow layers. Red Jar (w/o rim):

9" X 8"

$600 (uncarved)
